Where to Find Spring Flowers in Hattiesburg

Springtime brings gorgeous blooms all over Hattiesburg, starting in early March with the azalea bushes ringing in the season, to the rose gardens that welcome us into summer. Hattiesburg prides itself in manicuring its flower beds in public parks and creating the perfect backdrop for springtime activities. So if you’re a flower-happy person, here are a few ideas on ways to get out and “smell the roses.”

The All-American Rose Garden

The All-American Rose Garden, located on The University of Southern Mississippi’s campus, is home to over 800 separate rose bushes that attract admirers from all over the country. The weather dictates when the roses begin blooming, but the first full “flush” normally appears by mid-April. The roses continue to bloom throughout the summer months until the cooler days and nights occur (usually early November).

Downtown Hattiesburg

Downtown Hattiesburg is home to hanging baskets of flowers that feature seasonal blooms. But if you want to see some extra special flowers take our walking tour of the Historic Downtown Neighborhood. There you can find beautiful historic homes with gardens full of colorful blooms. 

Long Leaf Trace

Want to see something a little different? Take a stroll on the 44-mile long Long Leaf Trace. There are no manicured beds on this trail, but you will be able to find native flora and fauna along the path. Make sure to stop at the Ronnie Shows Nature Center & Denbury Beaver Pond to get a better view of the wildlife along the way!

Daylily Destination 

Did you know that the official flower of Hattiesburg is the daylily? In 2008, Hattiesburg City Council adopted the daylily as the city’s flower, and a decade later, Hattiesburg was the first city in the nation to be given the designation as a “Daylily City” by the American Daylily Society Recently to show our love for the flower, HAPA recruited artist Kym Garraway to paint a mural entitled “Daylily Destination.” The mural is located on the corner of Buschman and Mobile Streets and various species of daylilies as well as monarch butterflies. Share your pictures of yourself with the mural using #arthburg on social media.

Hattiesburg Botanical Garden

This small garden packs a punch! With its early spring tulips and hub sign garden beds it is sure make any anthophile feel at home. Although the tulips are gone for this year keep an eye out on their social media channels for the next cut flowers coming to the garden.
