In fact, summer months are perfect for enjoying many of Hattiesburg’s outdoor activities, and long days of sunshine really mean one thing: more time to play!

Splish splash down cool creeks: While Hattiesburg has been built up around its Historic Downtown, world-class medical facilities, and two universities, just outside of town, you’ll find great opportunities for play in the great outdoors. Black Creek Canoe Rentals and Okatoma Outdoor Post are just two options close by for canoe and kayak rentals that are fun for the whole family. There’s nothing better than paddling downstream on a hot afternoon, and these companies make it easy to rent your equipment and even provide camping options if you want to make a weekend of it.

Pace the Trace: You’ve paddled your way around South Mississippi, so why not stretch your legs for a bit? Downtown Hattiesburg is home to the beginning of the Longleaf Trace, which runs west through the city to Prentiss, offering a shady and serene setting for bikers and hikers—well, runners and walkers. The paved path follows old railroad lines, offering scenic views of local vegetation along the 41-mile stretch, and if you keep an eye out, you’re likely to spot rabbits or even deer near the trail. Visiting Hattiesburg and didn’t bring your bikes? No problem! Moore’s Bicycle Shop has a location at the Trace depot near USM’s campus, so you can rent bicycles for the whole gang for the day.

Paint the town: Take summer to the extreme with competitive attractions around HBURG. Head to Eagle Action Sportz for paintball with friends, and you’ll enjoy play with regulation fields or for-fun options. New to the sport? Rent gear on-site. Not sure paintball is your thing? Consider it a toss-up and hit up one of Hattiesburg’s disc golf courses. You’ll find options for the Frisbee sport at Paul B. Johnson State Park and at Tatum Park. Paul B. also offers boating, a splash pad, camping, and playgrounds, while Tatum Park boasts baseball/softball and soccer fields.

Play 18 (Or the back 9): A major draw to Hattiesburg is its many golf courses, including championship options. Whether you’re looking to make a day of it with a few friends or just want to squeeze in the back 9 on a free afternoon, golfers have plenty of courses from which to choose. Check out Shadow Ridge and Timberton near Midtown, or travel south a way to play Pine Creek. Local? Private courses like Canebrake and the Hattiesburg Country Club offer even more options. With a bright blue sky overhead, you’re on par for a great day on the green in HBURG.
